Spinal tumours are abnormal growths that develop in the spine. Some are cancerous, or malignant, while others are noncancerous, or benign. In some cases, cancerous tumours from another part of the body can spread to the spine. Spinal tumours, both malignant and benign, can cause pain if they press on your spinal cord. They can also cause problems with your nervous system and may result in permanent disability when left untreated.
Surgical procedures for tumours in the spine typically involve removing as much of the growth as possible. When tumours are caused by cancer that has spread from another part of the body, surgical treatment usually involves keeping the spine stable through spinal fusion or similar procedures.
